The Australian government currently advises Do Not Travel to Myanmar due to the dangerous security situation, including civil unrest and armed conflict.4 If you decide to travel despite this advice, be aware that the Australian government’s ability to provide consular assistance may be extremely limited.

eVisa Application Process

The Myanmar eVisa is the most convenient option for Australian tourists.1

Step 1: Create an Account

Visit the official Myanmar eVisa website at evisa.moip.gov.mm and register for an account. You will need a valid email address to receive your approval letter.1

Step 2: Complete the Application Form

Fill out the online application with your personal details, passport information, travel dates, and accommodation in Myanmar. Ensure all information matches your passport exactly.1

Step 3: Upload Required Documents

Upload the following:5

• Recent color passport photo (4.6cm x 3.8cm)
• Passport bio-data page scan
• Proof of return ticket
• Hotel booking confirmation

Step 4: Pay the Visa Fee

Pay USD 50 using Visa, Mastercard, or JCB credit/debit card. The fee is non-refundable regardless of the application outcome.1

Step 5: Receive Approval Letter

Processing takes a minimum of 3 working days. You will receive an acknowledgment email within 1 hour of successful payment, and the approval letter via email once processed.5

Step 6: Enter Myanmar

Print your approval letter and present it with your passport at immigration. The visa will be stamped into your passport upon arrival.1

eVisa holders can only enter Myanmar through these designated entry points:5

If you plan to enter via cruise ship, you cannot use the eVisa. Contact your tour agent for Pre-arrangement Visa on Arrival.5

Children under 7 years old are exempt from visa fees when included on a parent’s passport.3

Embassy Application Alternative

If you prefer a paper application or need a visa for purposes not covered by the eVisa, you can apply at the Myanmar Embassy in Canberra.3

Requirements for Embassy Application:3

• Original passport (6+ months validity)
• Completed tourist visa application form
• Two recent passport-size color photographs
• Booked air ticket with departure date
• Dates of entry and exit (in writing)
• Visa fee: AUD 60
• Self-addressed prepaid return envelope
• Health Declaration Form (Mpox)

Allow at least 4 weeks for processing when applying through the embassy.3

Validity and Stay Duration

Your eVisa approval letter is valid for 90 days. If you do not enter Myanmar within this period, it expires and you must apply again.5

The tourist visa is single entry only. Re-entry requires a new visa application.5

During Your Stay

Accommodation Registration

Tourists must stay in registered hotels, motels, inns, guest houses, resorts, or on boats. Private homestays are not permitted for tourists.5

Restricted Areas

Some areas of Myanmar are restricted for foreigners and tourists. Before traveling outside major cities, check restricted area lists at mip.gov.mm. Travel to certain regions may require special permits.5

Legal Compliance

Visitors must abide by Myanmar laws and cannot interfere in internal affairs. Violating local laws can result in arrest, detention, or deportation.3

If Your Visa Application is Rejected

Myanmar does not disclose specific reasons for visa rejection.5 The eVisa fee is non-refundable.

If rejected, you can:

1. Review all documents for completeness and accuracy
2. Ensure your passport photo meets specifications
3. Verify all information matches your passport exactly
4. Submit a new application with corrected documents

If Entry is Denied at the Airport

If immigration denies your entry despite having an approval letter, you will be returned on the same flight.5

Possible reasons for denial include:

• Using travel documents instead of a passport
• Expired approval letter (over 90 days old)
• Attempting to enter through a non-designated port
• Information discrepancies between documents and application
• Security concerns

Important Notes

Travel Insurance

Obtain comprehensive travel insurance before departure. Given Myanmar’s current situation and limited medical facilities in many areas, insurance covering medical evacuation is strongly recommended.4

Register your travel plans with the Australian Government through Smartraveller. The Australian Embassy in Yangon can provide limited consular assistance, but services may be restricted due to the security situation.4

Currency and Payments

ATMs are available in major cities but may be unreliable. Bring US dollars in good condition (no tears, marks, or old series) as backup. Credit cards are accepted at larger hotels and restaurants in Yangon and Mandalay.

Health Precautions

Consult a travel health clinic before departure. Vaccinations for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, and Japanese encephalitis may be recommended. Malaria is present in some areas.
