Application Process

Pakistani citizens must apply for a Japan tourist visa in person.1 Residents of Punjab, KPK, AJK, Gilgit-Baltistan, and the Islamabad Capital Territory apply through VFS Global, the authorized visa processing partner of the Embassy of Japan.3 Residents of Sindh and Baluchistan must apply directly at the Consulate General of Japan in Karachi.4

Step 1: Prepare Your Documents

Gather all required documents including passport, CNIC, photographs, travel itinerary, accommodation bookings, flight reservations, and bank statements.1 Create a detailed day-by-day itinerary as Japanese consulates value thorough planning. Arrange documents in the exact order specified in the checklist.3

Step 2: Complete the Application Form

Download the visa application form from the Embassy of Japan website or VFS Global.3 Fill all fields completely in English using block letters. No column should be left blank. Ensure all information matches your supporting documents exactly and sign the form by hand.1

Step 3: Book an Appointment (VFS Global Only)

For applications through VFS Global in Islamabad, book an appointment online and pay the service fee of PKR 3,000 at the time of booking.3 For applications at the Karachi Consulate, check their submission hours directly.

Step 4: Submit Your Application

Visit the Japan Visa Application Centre or Consulate on your appointment date.3 Submit your documents in person. Applications with incomplete documents may not be accepted.1 Visa applications should be submitted between 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Embassy.1

Step 5: Wait for Processing

Standard processing takes a minimum of 6 working days if documentation is complete.3 Some cases may require additional verification, which extends processing time. The Embassy does not issue same-day visas.1

Step 6: Collect Your Passport

Passports are returned between 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM at the Embassy (1:30 PM to 2:30 PM during Ramadan).1 At VFS Global, you will receive notification when your passport is ready for collection.

Fees

Pakistani passport holders are exempt from the standard visa fee.3 The VFS Global service charge of PKR 3,000 (approximately $11 USD) is mandatory, non-refundable, and paid online at the time of appointment booking. All other charges are paid in cash in Pakistani Rupees.3

What You Need to Prove

Japanese consulates assess applications based on several key factors.2 You must demonstrate:

Genuine Tourism Intent: Your itinerary should show realistic tourism plans with specific attractions, cities, and activities. Vague plans like “sightseeing in Japan” are insufficient. Include specific temple names, city areas, and daily activities.2

Financial Capacity: Bank statements must show sufficient funds to cover your entire trip including accommodation, transportation, activities, and daily expenses. A consistent balance over 6 months is more convincing than a recently deposited lump sum. Ensure bank statements are attested by the bank manager.1

Strong Ties to Pakistan: Employment letters, property documents, and family obligations demonstrate your intention to return. First-time travelers and young single applicants should emphasize these ties with strong documentation.2

Clean Travel History: Previous visas to developed countries like the US, UK, or Schengen area significantly strengthen your application. If you have prior visa refusals, the Embassy notes that applicants rejected within the last 6 months may face additional scrutiny.1

Processing Times

Standard processing takes a minimum of 6 business days at VFS Global.3 However, processing may take longer in certain situations:

Apply at least 3 to 4 weeks before your intended travel date to account for any delays.3 Note that you cannot submit your visa application if your travel date is more than 90 days from your application submission date.3

After Your Visa is Approved

Once approved, your visa sticker will be placed in your passport. Check the validity dates and number of entries carefully. Single-entry visas are typically valid for 3 months from the date of issue.2

At the Japanese port of entry, immigration officers may ask to see:

• Return flight ticket
• Hotel bookings or accommodation proof
• Travel itinerary
• Proof of sufficient funds
• Travel insurance (if you have it)

Keep all documents accessible during your flight. Japan has efficient immigration processing, but be prepared to answer questions about your trip purpose and duration.

If Your Visa is Refused

Japan does not provide reasons for visa refusals.1 The Embassy of Japan in Pakistan explicitly states that if a visa is refused, its reason will never be given.1 If your application is rejected:

1. Understand the Waiting Period

The Embassy notes that a visa application with all new documents can be submitted again after 6 months of refusal.1 Reapplying too soon without improvements is likely to result in another rejection.

2. Review Your Application

Consider what might have caused the refusal: insufficient funds, weak ties to Pakistan, incomplete itinerary, document inconsistencies, or poor travel history.

3. Strengthen Your Documentation

Use the 6-month waiting period to address potential weaknesses: build savings with consistent deposits, obtain stronger employment documentation, or create a more detailed travel plan with specific attractions.

4. Build Travel History

If you have no international travel experience, consider visiting visa-friendly countries first to establish a positive travel record. Countries like Malaysia, Thailand, and UAE offer easier visa processes for Pakistani citizens.
