Application Process

Follow these steps to apply for your Germany Schengen visa:

1. Determine your travel dates and create a detailed itinerary
   Plan your trip comprehensively, listing all cities you’ll visit and the duration in each. Your itinerary should be consistent with your hotel reservations.1 If visiting multiple Schengen countries, ensure Germany is your main destination or first entry point.

2. Gather all required documents
   Collect your passport, photographs, bank certificate, 6 months of bank statements, employment documentation, travel insurance, and hotel reservations. Review the complete requirements checklist on the German Embassy Manila website.1

3. Complete the VIDEX online application form
   Fill out the Schengen visa application on the VIDEX website.2 Enter your middle name as “Surname at Birth” and use the German date format (day, month, year). Print all pages including barcodes and sign the form.

4. Purchase travel insurance
   Buy Schengen travel insurance with minimum €30,000 coverage valid for all member states and your entire travel period.4 The German Embassy provides a list of recommended insurance companies.

5. Book VFS Global appointment
   Schedule your appointment at VFS Global in Manila or Cebu through their online booking system.2 Slots fill quickly during peak season, so book well in advance.

6. Attend biometrics appointment at VFS
   Arrive early with your original passport, printed application form, appointment confirmation, and all supporting documents organized in A4 format with one original and one copy of each document.1 Your fingerprints and photograph will be captured.

7. Pay visa fee and VFS service charge
   Pay €90 visa fee (€45 for children 6-12, free for under 6) plus ₱1,150 VFS service charge in Manila or ₱1,210 in Cebu.3 Payment can be made in cash or by credit card, collected online during the appointment.

8. Submit application and documents
   VFS staff will verify your documents and forward your application to the German Embassy. You’ll receive a tracking reference to monitor your application status.2

9. Track application status
   Check your application progress on the VFS Global website using your reference number. Processing typically takes 15 calendar days.1

10. Collect passport with visa
    Once processed, collect your passport from VFS or opt for courier delivery at an additional cost. Your visa sticker will show validity dates, number of entries allowed, and duration of stay.

Applications can be submitted up to 6 months before your intended travel date.3 Incomplete applications may be rejected, so ensure all documents are complete before submission.

Fees

Fees are effective from November 3, 2025.3 The visa fee is non-refundable, even if your application is rejected. Exchange rates fluctuate, so the PHP equivalent may vary at the time of payment.

What You Need to Prove

German consular officers assess your application based on several key criteria:

Genuine tourism purpose: Your itinerary and hotel reservations must demonstrate a clear tourism intent and be consistent with each other. The Embassy will reject applications with vague or inconsistent travel plans.1

Sufficient financial means: Your bank certificate and 6 months of bank statements should show stable income with regular salary credits. The account should reflect adequate funds to cover your entire trip without financial strain.1 Avoid large unexplained deposits shortly before applying.

Strong ties to the Philippines: Employment contracts with salary history, property ownership, family ties through marriage and children, and business registrations all prove your intention to return. First-time travelers should pay particular attention to this criterion.1

Return intent: If you’re a first-time traveler to Germany, provide an informal declaration explaining your incentives to return to the Philippines before your visa expires. Be specific about your employment, family obligations, property, or business ties.1

Previous travel compliance: If you have traveled to Schengen countries before, include copies of previous visas. A clean travel history with no overstays significantly strengthens your application.1

Adequate insurance coverage: Your travel insurance must meet exact specifications: minimum €30,000 coverage, valid across all Schengen states, covering medical emergencies and repatriation.1

Processing Times

Standard processing for Germany Schengen visas is 15 calendar days from the date of application submission at VFS Global.1

During peak travel seasons, processing may extend to 3 weeks. The Embassy processes a high volume of applications during European summer (June-August) and the holiday season (December-January).

Application timing rules:

• Earliest: 6 months before travel
• Recommended: Apply 4-6 weeks before your trip
• Latest: At least 15 days before departure1

After Your Visa is Approved

Your visa sticker will display:

• Validity period: The dates between which you can enter the Schengen Area
• Duration of stay: Maximum days allowed (up to 90 days within 180 days)
• Number of entries: Single, double, or multiple entry
• Territorial validity: Usually “Schengen States” unless restricted

At border control: Immigration officers may ask about your trip purpose, accommodation, return ticket, and financial means. Carry printed copies of your hotel bookings, return flight ticket, travel insurance, and proof of sufficient funds.

The 90/180 rule: You can stay maximum 90 days in any 180-day period across all Schengen countries combined.1 Overstaying results in fines, deportation, and bans on future Schengen visas.

Philippine exit requirements: After receiving your visa, check with Philippine authorities about any exit requirements, particularly if traveling with minors who may need DSWD travel permits.1

If Your Visa is Refused

If your application is rejected, you’ll receive a written refusal letter stating the specific reasons.1 Common causes include insufficient documentation, unclear travel purpose, inadequate financial proof, or doubts about your intention to return to the Philippines.

Your options after refusal:

1. Reapply with corrected documentation: There is no mandatory waiting period. Address the specific issues mentioned in the refusal letter and submit a new application with complete documentation. The visa fee must be paid again.

2. File a lawsuit: You have one month from receiving the refusal to file a legal challenge at the administrative court in Berlin. This requires detailed justification, additional evidence, and legal representation. Note that as of July 1, 2025, the remonstration (informal appeal) process has been abolished.1

The visa fee is non-refundable regardless of the decision.3
