Application Process

Bangladeshi citizens must apply for a Japan tourist visa through VFS Global, the authorized visa processing partner of the Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh.3 The Japan Visa Application Centre in Dhaka opened in November 2024 to streamline the application process.4

Step 1: Prepare Your Documents

Gather all required documents including passport, photographs, travel itinerary, accommodation bookings, flight reservations, and bank statements.1 Create a detailed day-by-day itinerary as Japanese consulates value thorough planning.2

Step 2: Complete the Application Form

Download the visa application form from the Embassy of Japan website or VFS Global.3 Fill it completely in English using block letters. Ensure all information matches your supporting documents exactly.

Step 3: Submit at VFS Global

Visit the Japan Visa Application Centre operated by VFS Global in Dhaka.3 Submit your documents and pay the applicable service charges. No appointment is required for submission.

Step 4: Wait for Processing

Standard processing takes 5 working days.3 Some cases may require an interview or additional document verification, which extends processing time. Track your application status through the VFS Global website.

Step 5: Collect Your Passport

You will receive notification when your passport is ready for collection. Collect your passport from the VFS Global center or use the optional courier service (BDT 840) for home delivery.3

Fees

All charges must be paid in cash in Bangladeshi Taka (BDT).3 Service charges apply even though the visa itself is free for Bangladeshi nationals.

What You Need to Prove

Japanese consulates assess applications based on several key factors.2 You must demonstrate:

Genuine Tourism Intent: Your itinerary should show realistic tourism plans with specific attractions, cities, and activities. Vague plans like “sightseeing in Japan” are insufficient. Include specific temple names, city areas, and daily activities.2

Financial Capacity: Bank statements must show sufficient funds to cover your entire trip including accommodation, transportation, activities, and daily expenses. A consistent balance over 6 months is more convincing than a recently deposited lump sum.1

Strong Ties to Bangladesh: Employment letters, property documents, and family obligations demonstrate your intention to return. First-time travelers and young single applicants should emphasize these ties in supporting documents.2

Clean Travel History: Previous visas to developed countries like the US, UK, or Schengen area significantly strengthen your application. If you have prior visa refusals, address them honestly if asked.2

Processing Times

Standard processing takes 5 working days at VFS Global.3 However, processing may take longer in certain situations:

Apply at least 2 to 3 weeks before your intended travel date to account for any delays.3 Note that applications submitted more than 3 months before your travel date may not be accepted.

After Your Visa is Approved

Once approved, your visa sticker will be placed in your passport. Check the validity dates and number of entries carefully. Single-entry visas are typically valid for 3 months from the date of issue.2

At the Japanese port of entry, immigration officers may ask to see:

• Return flight ticket
• Hotel bookings or accommodation proof
• Travel itinerary
• Proof of sufficient funds
• Travel insurance (if you have it)

Keep all documents accessible during your flight. Japan has efficient immigration processing, but be prepared to answer questions about your trip purpose and duration.

If Your Visa is Refused

Japan typically does not provide detailed reasons for visa refusals.2 The Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh notes that applications denied within the last 6 months may face additional scrutiny on reapplication.1 If refused, you can:

1. Review Your Application

Consider what might have caused the refusal: insufficient funds, weak ties to Bangladesh, incomplete itinerary, or document inconsistencies.

2. Strengthen Your Documentation

Wait at least 6 months before reapplying if recently refused. Use this time to address potential weaknesses: build savings, obtain stronger employment documentation, or create a more detailed travel plan.

3. Build Travel History

If you have no international travel experience, consider visiting visa-friendly countries first to establish a positive travel record. Countries like Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Maldives offer easier visa processes for Bangladeshi citizens.
